The Mid-States Minority Supplier Development Council (Mid-States MSDC), an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), is one of the nation’s premier organizations for increasing business and contracting opportunities between major buying organizations and minority- owned businesses. It is a membership organization for major corporations, financial institutions, government agencies, and universities and operates within a service area comprised of Central Illinois, Indiana and Eastern Missouri. Specifically, the Mid-States MSDC promotes and facilitates the development of business relationships between its members and NMSDC-certified minority-owned business enterprises.

The Council works to expand business opportunities for minority-owned companies in an effort to build a stronger, more equitable society by supporting and promoting minority supplier development. The Council has over 60 national and local corporate members and approximately 250 certified minority businesses. The Council organizes networking events, educational sessions and unique opportunities that serve as venues for Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) and corporate members to come together and identify mutually beneficial opportunities to work with one another.

The Mid-States MSDC is a private, non-profit organization categorized by the IRS as 501(c)(3). The Council is headquartered in Indianapolis, IN with a regional office in St. Louis, MO and relies on advisory committee volunteers to assist with programs in each region. This approach helps develop closer relationships with members, and better defines programs and services. The Council is an affiliate of the NMSDC and its relationship is governed by an affiliation agreement executed by NMSDC and the Council. Continued affiliation with the NMSDC is at the sole discretion of the NMSDC.

NMSDC Strategy and Goal

The strategy of the NMSDC is to engage in the business of aiding the growth and development of ethnic- minority-owned business through the purchasing of goods and services, by public and private purchasing entities with the goal of assisting bona-fide ethnic-minority businesses in becoming long term, qualified entities capable of competing in the national and international economic mainstream.

Position Overview:

The Executive Director reports to the President/CEO of the Mid-States MSDC and is responsible for managing member relationships and the recruitment of local corporate members and customers in the Central Illinois and Eastern Missouri area. The Executive Director will be an advocate for MBEs to corporate members, while working with corporations to better understand corporate procurement needs and defining effective scenarios for both entities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Secure new members in a classic business development role. Identify, secure and expand strategic, profitable long-term national and local corporate With new business development cycle times of 6-12 months, to ensure there is a robust pipeline of qualified prospective members in the Central Illinois and Eastern Missouri markets.
  • Responsible for ongoing understanding of key corporate practices and insights (e.g., critical “pain points”) to continually identify future value-added solutions that mutually benefit the corporate member, MBE, and the Mid-States MSDC. This includes ensuring appropriate capabilities are clearly understood and communicated to the President/CEO to insure products and services will be delivered as
  • Maintain relationships with existing corporate members and MBEs in the Central Illinois and Eastern Missouri areas to identify opportunities within corporations and match MBEs capable of fulfilling the opportunities.
  • Under the direction and approval of the President/CEO, lead the efforts to secure sponsorship, in-kind donation, and grant income that support existing and new programing in the
  • Attend local city and county business meetings that pertain to diversity or MBE issues in Central Illinois and Eastern Missouri and brief all findings and issues in the local market to the President/CEO.
  • Work with Director of Corporate Relations, Projects and Events to execute market and plan annual networking events and programming, in conjunction with the Executive Vice President to maintain the allotted income and expense budget for the Central Illinois and Eastern Missouri
  • Oversee operations of the Mid-States MSDC local office in St. Louis and develop new and custom designed programming that provides value to Central Illinois and Eastern Missouri constituents, in conjunction with Mid- States MSDC’s Executive Vice
  • Must have a willingness to travel within the Mid-States MSDC region (Eastern Missouri, Indiana and Central Illinois).

Skills & Abilities

  • Track record of effectively developing new business with new strategic members using a systemic approach to managing a portfolio of new opportunities through the prospect or membership funnel. While the key focus of the role is new business with new members, there is also an expectation that this role will help cultivate new opportunities within existing members (e.g., cross-selling or referrals) in collaboration with the Mid-States MSDC resources handling ongoing corporate
  • Experience (Regional or National level) with blue-chip, market-leading corporate organizations. This should include a history of working directly with Corporate Management counterparts on new membership or institutional
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and work at a high level of activity under a variety of conditions and constraints and manage and deliver on mutually agreed upon

Education/Experience

  • Experience with various Microsoft programs, including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook and have the willingness to learn new

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business related studies and/or long-term leadership experience in a non-profit or corporate
